Week 26 – Family of Christ Lutheran Church – Lutheran

I visited this church early on in my journey and it is the only church that I have been back to a second time. My 5-year-old daughter Candace sang in the children’s program that the school put on today. She was absolutely adorable and she definitely knows how to rock those Christmas songs. The children’s ministry is a very important part of the church and the community.

Pastor Fred wore his church robes today and we even got to be present for the Baptism of a little girl named Madison. It’s interesting what you learn when you are actually paying attention. I keep coming back to the idea of words and stories and the telling of history over two thousand years. Today I learned that Jesus was a great story-teller. It makes sense. We teach and learn and communicate through words. Perhaps it is the ultimate expression of who we are as humans. Jesus wanted very much to share the cleansing of sins through baptism with children. The water is not necessarily special; it’s not even bottled water from a fresh flowing glacier source.

After the adorable singing the children went off to Sunday School. I decided that since I have no memory of ever having attended Sunday School I would follow along and see what the children learn. I liked sitting in a little chair at a little table in the midst of a colorful, fun classroom. There was drama and theatrics and hand raising and the spouting off of some accurate and some not-so-accurate bible facts by little people. So cute!

We learned that the song, The 12 Days of Christmas, is not a count down to Christmas but the 12 days after Christmas until the Epiphany on January 6th. Uh… What’s the Epiphany? I thought it was when you had a brilliant idea or a light bulb went off! So I will need to do a little google research on that! Did you know that the Wise Men were not present at the birth of Jesus and they came knocking about 2 years later? Hmmm… Seems some of our commercial images might not be right. But of course, I could be wrong about that too! We discussed the difference between Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. And we learned that with the Lord there is no need to be afraid.

It was a very nice morning followed by cupcakes and coffee with Candace’s friends and their mommies. In fact, we were so excited about the prospect of Christmas that we raced home and set up our girly, girl Christmas tree and daddy hung the lights. Candace was our big helper today. So much fun.

So much to learn…
